About Plug-in Solar Finder

Chris lived off grid on solar power for three years, then designed and built a solar and battery system to run irrigation at a market garden. He built Plug-in Solar Finder to give UK households straight, independent answers about plug-in solar and backup power. Every number on the site comes from public data, and we show our working.

What the checker does

  • Tells you whether plug-in solar is worth it for your spot, using sunshine data for your part of Great Britain.
  • Shows the compliant kits that fit your space and budget, ranked by how quickly they pay for themselves.
  • Gives you a checklist so you stay within the rules that came in on 27 August 2026.
  • Explains plainly what plug-in solar can and cannot do, including in a power cut.

Where the numbers come from

Sunshine figures come from PVGIS, the European Commission's free solar data service. Electricity prices use Ofgem's price cap. Kit prices come from UK retailer listings, and each kit shows the date we last checked it. The checker gives estimates, not a guarantee, and the "How these numbers are worked out" section on the checker explains every assumption.

How the site is paid for

The checker is free. Some links to retailers may earn us a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. That never changes which kits we rank first. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Who runs it

Plug-in Solar Finder is a trading name of Fanfield Farm Ltd, company number 12103787, registered office 1 East Cottages, East Tytherley Road, Romsey, England, SO51 0LW.
